:: Brancacci Chapel ::
Here a century after Giotto, the young Masaccio 'rivaled nature' and revolutionized Western art. Most Renaissance painters, from Fra Angelico to Raphael, studied these frescoes, but perhaps none understood them as well as Michelangelo.
This chapel (built around 1386) was frescoed by Renaissance painters Masolino of Panicale, Masaccio, and Filippino Lippi. The difference between Masolino and Masaccio's style bears witness of the transition from late Gothic culture to the Renaissance. The central theme of this fresco cycle is the salvation of man, illustrated through episodes of St. Peter's life.
Once you have seen these faces with their quick, watching eyes you will see them again and again in Florence
